Aluminum wiring: pigtailing vs. rewiring cost

Is aluminum wiring a problem, and which homes have it?

Aluminum branch circuit wiring, found mostly in homes built 1965 to the mid-1970s, is a documented fire hazard: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found connections at outlets 55 times more likely to reach "Fire Hazard Conditions" than copper. A licensed electrician prices the fix; whole-home pigtailing, one of CPSC's three accepted repairs, runs $3,000 to $15,000+ (Epic Electrical, Dallas-Fort Worth).

CPSC attributes the hazard to "several deterioration processes in aluminum wire connections that cause increased resistance to the flow of electric current, resulting in damage that is cumulative in effect," adding that the resistance "causes overheating, sometimes at hazardous levels" (CPSC Publication 516).

On which homes have it, CPSC states: "homes built before 1965 are unlikely to have aluminum branch circuit wiring," while "electrical cables installed between 1965 and the mid 1970s in new homes, in additions, and as part of rewired/new circuits may contain aluminum wiring." A copper shortage in the mid-1960s pushed builders to use aluminum on ordinary 15- and 20-amp circuits, not just the large-appliance circuits that had used it before then. CPSC's repair guidance also does not cover the larger-gauge aluminum wire used for service entrance cables, electric clothes dryers, and cooking ranges, only the branch circuit wiring at outlets, switches, and fixtures.

What does aluminum wiring remediation cost?

CPSC approves three methods as a permanent repair: complete replacement with copper cable, the COPALUM crimp connector, and the AlumiConn connector, which it calls "the next best alternative" where a COPALUM installer isn't available (CPSC Publication 516). What it costs depends on which method your electrician uses and how much of the house needs it. Prices below were checked on 2026-09-19. How much does it cost to pigtail aluminum wiring?

Pigtailing splices a short length of copper wire onto each aluminum wire at every connection, so the box holds a standard copper-rated device. CPSC accepts two connectors for this: COPALUM, installed with "a dedicated power tool and crimping die to make a permanent connection... a cold weld," and AlumiConn, a setscrew connector CPSC calls acceptable when a COPALUM installer isn't available. CPSC "strongly recommends against" any other crimp connector, because "no other crimp connectors have been evaluated for connecting copper and aluminum conductors." It also found that pigtailing with ordinary twist-on wire connectors "does not solve the problem of overheating," and that "CO/ALR" rated switches and receptacles are, in its words, "at best, an incomplete repair."

Whether a given repair satisfies your local electrical code isn't a call this page can make. CPSC says only that "all modifications and additions to installed wiring should be performed and inspected in accordance with local regulations." Your local building department or a licensed electrician answers that for your address.

How much does it cost to replace aluminum wiring with copper?

CPSC calls complete replacement "the best method available," since it "eliminates the primary cause of the potential hazards: the aluminum wire itself." It also says that "for many homes, rewiring with copper is impractical and/or prohibitively expensive," which is why the pigtail methods above exist as accepted alternatives. The rewire rows in the table above run $2,000 to $20,000+, with per-circuit pricing at $395 to $476.

Who fixes aluminum wiring, and can I get a price before my window closes?

A licensed electrician. CPSC is direct on this: "it is highly recommended that you hire a qualified electrician to perform this remediation." Its troubleshooting guidance is blunter still: if you notice signs of a problem, "have a qualified electrician determine the cause. DO NOT TRY TO DO IT YOURSELF. You could be electrocuted, or you could make the problem worse." What do I ask the seller for?

Name the finding, the trade, the method, and a sourced figure, the same way you'd price any other line. For example: "Aluminum branch wiring found at outlets and panel per the inspection report. Is aluminum wiring a reason to walk away?

Not on its own, even though CPSC documents a real fire hazard at failing aluminum connections. CPSC's accepted repairs put a real number on the fix, whether that's pigtailing or a full rewire, and a priced, negotiable finding isn't a walk-away finding by itself.
